State senators in New York today approved a bill to legalize mixed martial arts, according to multiple reports. The measure passed the Senate by a 32-26 margin, the Wall Street Journal reported. New York’s Assembly, where the opposition is led by Assemblyman Bob Reilly, has yet to vote on the measure.

This isn’t the first time one house of the state Legislature has given the nod to legalization. The Assembly in 2007 approved a legalization measure, but it never made it through the Senate.

Officials for the Ultimate Fighting Championship hoped to get New York’s sanction last year, but political squabbles in the Senate derailed the entire legislative calendar. Gov. David Patterson included MMA regulation in this year’s budget proposal.

Although the state led the way in banning mixed martial arts during the late 1990s, some of the its key political figures now support legalization, including the head of the state’s athletic commissioner, secretary of state and former governor George Pataki, who signed the original ban.
